Info: Tree Report

This report from an outside contractor will be used to determine the fate of trees of significance along the trail during the cleanup. If you are concerned about trees along the trail, please read this report. Members of Save Our Trails walked the trail on Sunday Sept 19th to review this report. The report was forwarded by Andrew Berna-Hicks, at the Department of Toxic Substances Control. These files are also stored at the DTSC website.

Below find a link to the ROW map showing locations of significant trees along ROW. Below that is explanation and pictures of each tree provided by Carolyn Moore of CDM. Please note that in our opinion we should be collecting samples for trees in item #s 1, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 12. Trees in item #s 2, 3, 4, 7, and 11 are outside the planned excavation limits, so we will not collect samples. I will share this information with the City’s parks department.

We plan to do two borings per tree and collect two samples (1 feet and 3 feet) per boring per tree, that is total 14 borings and 28 samples. The samples will be analyzed for metals and SVOCs.

Below is a listing of trees that may be impacted by the planned excavation activities along with their distance from the centerline and along the ROW from one of the major intersecting streets. I generally identified trees with a trunk radius greater than 1.5′ or that appeared significantly mature.

1. Located approximately 284 feet north of Minnesota Avenue. The trunk is approximately 17.7 feet from the centerline. The dripline extends within the proposed excavation area.

2. Located approximately 647 feet north of Minnesota Avenue. The trunk is approximately 23 feet from the centerline. The dripline extends within the proposed excavation area. Based on maturity/size this tree may not be considered significant.

7. Located approximately 639 feet north of Willow Street. The trunk is approximately 30 feet from the centerline. The dripline extends within the proposed excavation area. Based on the extent of the dripline this tree may be impacted by the remedial action.

8. Located approximately 405 feet north of Broadway Avenue within the landscaping to the east of Leona Court. The trunk is approximately 20 feet from the centerline. Based on maturity/size this tree may not be considered significant.

9. Located approximately 485 feet north of Broadway Avenue within the landscaping east of Leona Court. The trunk is approximately 19 feet from the centerline. Based on maturity/size this tree may not be considered significant.

10. Located approximately 665 feet north of Broadway Avenue within the landscaping east of Leona Court. The trunk is approximately 12 feet from the centerline.

11. Located approximately 331 feet north of Coe Avenue. This tree was the oak discussed at the trails meeting on August 11th. The trunk is approximately 34 feet from the centerline. Some of the dripline extends within the proposed excavation area, but it is possible this tree will not be affected by remedial activities based on distance from the centerline.

12. Located approximately 415 feet north of Coe Avenue. This tree is a smaller oak located within the proposed excavation area. The trunk is located approximately 10 feet from the centerline. Based on maturity/size this tree may not be considered significant.

I’ve also included a few shots of the landscaped area running along the east side of Leona Court for illustration. This particular landscaped area was the subject of much discussion during the August 11th meeting. Most vegetation in this area is large bushes or shrubs and should not be considered significant. The few trees that may be considered significant are discussed above. The shots are taken from Coe Avenue looking south at the landscaped area.
